How We Approach Events

Unlike most newspapers, AnalogBrief does not publish long columns or extended opinion pieces on current events. The modern reader is already overwhelmed with commentary. What is often missing is a clear framework for understanding what events actually mean. AnalogBrief therefore approaches the world differently.

We have built a model for understanding world events. We call it The AnalogBrief Event Filter. At its core lies a simple observation: every event has the potential to change reality. By reality we mean the sum of all things and thoughts in the world - the material and non-material conditions of societies, the decisions of governments, the movements of markets, the ideas that shape cultures, and the countless human actions that connect them.

Events rarely remain isolated. They set processes in motion. A decision taken in one capital may alter the balance of power elsewhere. A technological breakthrough may reshape industries. A conflict, election, or financial shock may trigger consequences that spread outward in widening circles. What appears distant today may become personal tomorrow.

AnalogBrief therefore focuses on identifying those events whose effects are most likely to propagate through the system we call the state, or reality, of our world. Our briefings trace the potential chain of consequences from the initial development to the points where its impact may eventually reach everyday life.

The goal is not to predict everything. That would be impossible. The goal is to recognize early the events most capable of reshaping the environment in which we all live. Where newspapers often provide commentary, AnalogBrief provides structured understanding.

The AnalogBrief Event Filter

In the contemporary information world, individuals are confronted with an overwhelming volume of events, reports, and interpretations produced daily by global media systems. Yet the mere occurrence of an event does not necessarily imply significance. A large proportion of reported developments are transient, limited in scope, or devoid of lasting consequence. The central challenge, therefore, is not access to information, but the ability to distinguish between events that simply occur and those that meaningfully alter the structure of reality.

To address this problem, the AnalogBrief project introduces what we call an Event Filter - a conceptual framework designed to evaluate the relevance of events based on their capacity to generate consequences and propagate through political, economic, technological, or social systems. The purpose of this filter is not to catalogue every occurrence, but to identify those developments whose effects are likely to extend beyond their immediate context and shape future conditions.

By applying a sequence of analytical questions, the Event Filter allows events to be assessed according to their potential to modify existing realities and initiate chains of consequence. Only those events that demonstrate such characteristics are considered analytically relevant within the AnalogBrief framework.

A description may help clarify how the Event Filter functions:

Event Filter Sequence
Event Occurs
⬇

Does the event change reality?

(Does it alter material conditions, decisions, or ideas in the world?)

No → Not relevant

Yes → Continue

⬇

Does the event have consequences beyond the immediate moment?

No → Temporary occurrence

Yes → Continue

⬇

Can the consequences cause a domino effect?

(Political, economic, technological, or social impact)

No → Limited relevance

Yes → Continue

⬇

Does the event affect the structure of the future?

No → Secondary news

Yes → AnalogBrief Event

In Short

Event -> Consequence -> Propagation -> Structural Impact. Only events that pass all stages become briefs.

Another way to illustrate it would be a flow chart:
