A 31-year-old man from Southern California has been identified by authorities after an armed incident near the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday night. The individual is reported to have a background in teaching and video game development.

A lot of coverage will emerge around this assassination attempt, much of it noise. What truly matters are the reports that examine the motives behind the act.
It is important to note that in the United States, attempts against presidents have occurred more frequently than in many other parts of the world. We may recall the previous attempt on Donald Trump, when he was still running for office.
So what is the lesson? As political tensions rise and presidential actions become more polarising, the risk increases that individuals or extremist actors may seek to translate that tension into violence against the head of state.
