U.S. TO BLOCKADE IRANIAN PORTS

By Laszlo Enyedi • April 13, 2026

According to a statement posted on X by United States Central Command, U.S. forces will begin enforcing a blockade on all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports starting April 13 at 10 a.m. ET

"The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports," the post on X continues (13 April).

Why this matters

This signals that the United States is seeking a rapid and controlled way to escalate pressure without triggering a full disruption of global trade. The economic stakes are significant: key commodities—including oil, fertilizers, and other essential goods—depend on secure maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Any uncertainty in this corridor raises immediate concerns for markets and insurers, which are highly sensitive to geopolitical risk. The result can be a chain reaction—higher transport costs, rising prices, and broader economic pressure—depending on how the situation unfolds.
